Check Your Dog's Tags
split ring edge view split ring side view Check the split-rings on your dog's tags. These were only one year old when I replaced my dog's rabies tag. Another few weeks and her microchip info tag, rabies tag, and name/phone number tag would have been lost. Now I check her tags monthly when I give her the Heartguard chewable.
If you have a leather or nylon collar with riveted tags they will need to be checked as well. When hunting jack rabbits in New Mexico I used a leather collar with a riveted name/phone number tag. Even though I kept the collar treated with neetsfoot oil it still didn't take long for the collar to crack/wear around the buckle area and for the rivets to pull through the leather in the very dry climate. Since we were hunting several times per week I checked her collar often and replaced it every few months. Finally I got a double thickness nylon collar and used backing plates behind the rivets. I didn't use split ring attachments on this hunting collar as the tags would have just been pulled off/lost on the heavy brush and barbed wire fences. photo of leather collar to go here

You can get a free dog tag. Save the UPC section from the box or bag of your dog's Marrow Bone treats. It costs $1.00 for the postage, 2 UPC's, and a stamp. If I'm going to be staying with friends in other locations for several days/weeks then I get these tags to use while visiting. I just order it with my friend's name/phone number and it is mailed to their address. You have to plan ahead for this. If you make a last minute trip to another area you can go to a Pets Mart store and get a tag from their vending machine.
